New DVDPlay promotion - rent 10, get 1 free
dvdplay, news, redbox April 17th, 2008DVDPlay has added a new promotion for their frequent renters - Rent 10, Get 1 Free…
They hope this new program will help them gain on the #1 DVD Kiosk, Redbox, by bringing customers back to their kiosks more often.
DVDPlay CEO Chuck Berger had this to say: “We are thrilled with the success we’ve enjoyed over the past year, and we want to give back to those who helped us get here.” [from Videobusiness.com]
This sounds like a great program. Loyalty programs are good for both the company who implements them as well as consumers. I don’t think it will be enough, though. As Redbox ends up in more and more markets, how can DVDPlay compete?
As of right now, DVDPlay has about 1,400 kiosks, while Redbox has about 7,400.
What do you think? Does DVDPlay have any chance of catching Redbox?

Redbox has cornered the Washington DC market. There are more Redbox machines The price for a DVD is cheaper at Redbox. There are more promo codes at Redbox. Plus Redbox allow me to check just before I go to Redbox to see if the DVD I want is available. You can put DVD on hold on line. Sometime DVDplay have movie in their kiosk that Redbox does not carry. Only then will I check out the DVDPlay kiosk and see if they have promo code.

With Redbox the entrance of Wal-Mart and DVDPlay in the corner of stores with less volume I think Redbox will dominate this market. The machine will one day replace us all.

seriously? I’m a pretty loyal customer with DVDPlay and I’m happy with the mom-and-pop situation that they have just being in grocery stores. Then again, I personally feel icky shopping at a Wal-Mart.
